This is the specific fly mask my mare needs but it doesn’t come in her size. I need the Arab and the horse is too large. She pulls it off.

I have used this style and brand of mask for my horse for several years. They stay on well, pasture mates have difficulty removing the velcro, and the long nose protects my boy with the big blaze from getting a sunburned nose. They are easy to hand wash in a tub of soapy water and dry quickly. The eye area holds its shape so it doesn’t bump the horse’s eyes and the masks usually last a couple of years. I bought this new one to protect a surgical site on his face that I didn’t want him to be able to rub and it worked great for that.

I have a cremello paint gelding who sunburns badly, so masks are an important part of his life in the summer. I’ve gone through so many masks with this boy. He has a talent for taking them off and losing them somewhere in his pasture. I think he enjoys taunting me while I walk the pasture trying to find his mask yet again. This mask has broken a record. This is the first mask he has ever worn that has stayed on longer than three days. He hasn’t managed to get it off on his own in the month and a half he’s been wearing it. And he doesn’t seem to be irritated about wearing it like he has with all the others. This is the only mask that he just stands and allows me to put on him. It also looks well made and I think it might last longer than one season. Something I’ve never experienced before. The velcro is still as strong as the day I put it on him and other than the days it rained and he smeared his mask in the mud it looks near new after wearing it for over a month. The long nose is the perfect length to help protect his muzzle from the sun and it fits around his head like it was custom made for him. I’ll be recommending the Chahel fly masks to everyone and I’ll be buying another for my gelding as soon as his current one decides it’s ready for retirement.

My horse is very sensitive and fussy, and tends to rub his face on hard objects (fence posts, his leg, etc.) while wearing most fly masks, invariably rubbing an ulcer on the bridge of his nose under the nose band within a couple of weeks. No matter how expensive or high quality the fly mask (i.e., the other horses do fine with them) he would have problems. This summer was especially bad–he rubbed an ulcer under the nose band with his old fly mask and thus couldn’t continue to wear the mask until the ulcer healed, and as a result he was getting very irritated around his eyes by the flies (who ignored fly repellents). I bought this one, somewhat uncertain about how he would react to the long nose flap but desperate for something to keep the flies off. Once his nose ulcer had healed up enough, I put it on him, fearing a relapse. I was amazed at how well he accepted it. There is no irritation under the nose band, everything is healing up, and he has not destroyed it. It washes up clean in a bucket with some soap, and looks good as new. It stays on securely and fits very, very well. It is also very well made, with well finished seams and quality materials and nothing scratchy bothering the horse.

Does the job, stops the nose getting sunburnt, nice thick mesh so it lasts for the whole summer.
Good quality definitely worth paying the extra money for

    Bottom line:
A little long on my very average sized horse. Not bad at all tho.
After about three months the mesh has started to separate from the nose seam but she wears it 24/7 except when being ridden. Grazing about half of that time. So lots of wear.
For the price, it’s been great. No other visible wear other than the nose area.
    Will buy again next summer.

A very great buy for the price. I bought this for my painted Bavarian WB. She’s got a pink nose and is turned out from about 3pm until the morning so sun burn on her nose is a concern. Last year she had a normal fly mask that didn’t extend to the nose and I was constantly fighting sweat and grazing to keep a cream on her pink nose. This year we have no sunburn and no icky creams! This mask solved our problems. I’ve had it about 3 months now and the mesh is starting to come apart at the nose seam. She is not hard on masks, halters, etc but like I said, it is a little long for her face and she grazes on pasture 7 days a week and the only time she’s not wearing it in the summer is when we ride. So, it’s getting a lot of wear. Over all, will probably buy again next summer!

We’ve been having a hot spell. Our vet noticed our gelding had a bit of sunburn on his nose so recommended longer fly mask. We’ve bought Cashels for years. They are great. These are plenty long. Also bought the long Warmblood size for our draft cross mare. They love these masks and always lower their heads to make it easy for us to put on them. We don’t opt for the ear covers as we don’t have a lot of flies (we use fly predators from Arbico). The quality of these is great, and they wash well. Can get dusty at the nose where they breathe so watch for that to keep them clean. Of course, we take them off at night. Mrs. T

The only fly mask I will buy! Does great for Florida bug season and sun shield is terrific for my white faced/ blue eyed mare.
